PHILADELPHIA – The Chicago Cubs today placed outfielder Jason Heyward on the 10-day disabled list with right hamstring tightness and recalled right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples from Triple-A Iowa.

Maples will be available for the Cubs tonight when they begin their three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

The 27-year-old Maples has gone 2-3 with 10 saves and a 2.79 ERA (12 ER/38.2 IP) in 41 relief outings with Iowa this season. Maples has struck out 75 batters in 38.2 innings, an average of 17.5 strikeouts per nine innings, and has limited opponents to a .162 average. In his last 18 Triple-A outings since May 25, he has allowed just three earned runs in 25.0 innings, good for a 1.08 ERA, striking out 53 in 25.0 innings pitched. He joins the Cubs for the fifth time this season (5 ER/3.1 IP, 13.50 ERA, three relief outings).

Maples was originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2011 Draft. He made his major league debut in the final month of last season, allowing six runs in six relief outings (5.1 IP). Overall, he is 15-20 with 34 saves and a 4.30 ERA (136 ER/284.1 IP) in 176 career appearances (all but 30 in relief) covering seven minor league seasons. Last year he struck out 100 batters in 63.1 innings across three minor league levels.

Heyward, 29, is batting .275 (111-for-404) with 21 doubles, seven homers and 52 RBI in 114 games with the Cubs this season.
