Alex Cobb finally signs with an MLB team

by - Senior Editor -

It took forever but Alex Cobb will be playing baseball in 2018.

The former Tampa Bay Rays pitcher has reportedly agreed to a four-year deal worth around $56 million with the Baltimore Orioles pending a physical according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

This deal would be the highest contract for a free-agent pitcher in franchise history. He has a 4.62 ERA and 1.54 WHIP during his career at Camden Yards.

The Orioles were horrible last season with MLB's worst team ERA at 5.70 and will now have a projected starting rotation of Alex Cobb, Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman, and Andrew Cashner.

At one point during the offseason, Cobb was a main target of the Chicago Cubs and was offered a reported three-year deal worth around $42 million but he turned it down despite having his former manager Joe Maddon and his former pitching coach Jim Hickey on the team.

However, it all worked out extremely well for the North Siders as they ended up with starters Yu Darvish and Tyler Chatwood and Cobb didn't end up with any of the National League Central contenders like the Milwaukee Brewers or St. Louis Cardinals. It is extremely confusing that the Brewers didn't sign Cobb at this price point as they must not have been as high on him than some of the other teams.

Cobb played his entire seven-year career with the Tampa Bay Rays and finished the 2017 season with a 12-10 record with 3.66 ERA, 128 strikeouts, and 1.22 WHIP (10th in AL).

For his career, he has a 48-35 record with 3.50 ERA, 570 strikeouts, and 1.22 WHIP.
