Cubs News: Andre Dawson has been running funeral home, driving hearse for last decade

by - Senior Editor -

Hall-of-Famer Andre Dawson was known for his incredible blend of power and speed combined with his eight gold glove awards.

However, he has another unique talent as he has been running a funeral home called Paradise Memorial Funeral in Richmond Heights, Florida.

According to a recent interview with USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Dawson does everything except embalm the bodies at this facility.

"You'll see Dawson driving one of the five black hearses or limos, carrying a casket, consoling families to even mopping floors on nearly an everyday basis. He does everything but embalms the bodies in the holding room."

Dawson didn't know at first whether he would be able to do the difficult job.

"You never know where God is going to lead you," Dawson said. "But wherever it leads you, you have to be prepared. When this first fell into my lap, I prayed on it. I thought, 'How am I really going to pull this off without having the background, or knowing anything really about the industry?' But I wanted to make this as good a facility as I possibly could, and I'm proud of it. It's important to me because this is a product the community needs."

The funeral gig is a little shocking that Dawson is running it as his new post-baseball nickname should be 'The Undertaker' or something like that.
