Cubs News: Caratini on demotion to Triple-A: "Not happy with the decision"

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs made a somewhat surprising move keeping youngster catcher Victor Caratini on their Opening Day roster instead of veteran backstop Chris Gimenez.

The move was made partly because Caratini can also play first base and gives Cubs manager Joe Maddon the versatility that he covets on his roster.

In 26 games this season with the Cubs, Caratini is batting .262 with 4 RBIs in 65 at-bats.

However, he was getting enough playing time for a young and improving player so the Cubs demoted him to Triple-A Iowa for more seasoning.

"It’s tough," Caratini said after Tuesday’s game to the Des Moines Register. "You work for that, you work to be in the big leagues. I’m not happy with the decision, but it’s just part of baseball and you keep going."

Caratini was caught completely off guard with his demotion to Triple-A.

"Didn’t expect that," Caratini said. "I did my job. I did 100 percent in the big leagues and that’s not my decision. It’s the front office's decision. So the only thing I can do is come in here and play hard and give 100 percent."
