Cubs News: Craig Kimbrel headed to the DL

by - Senior Editor -

Cubs President of Operations Theo Epstein told reporters on Thursday that closer Craig Kimbrel is headed to the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.

Kimbrel's precautionary MRI came back negative, and he will be eligible for activation next Thursday.

“Unfortunately, we have to give it a few days without throwing to let it calm down. We expect a pretty quick ramp-up. We expect him to be back by the end of next week.”

Cubs manager Joe Maddon knows that injuries are part of the game of baseball.

"It’s the nature of the season, it seems, but hopefully it’s going to be short-lived. Just talking to him right now, it doesn’t sound horrible," Maddon told reporters. "We’ll play it all the way through and hopefully get him back relatively quickly."

For the season in 21 total games, Kimbrel has a 5.68 ERA with 13 saves (out of 15 opportunities), 1.53 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts.

He signed a three-year, $43 million contract in June.

Infielder David Bote was called up from Iowa to take his spot on the roster.
