Cubs agree to deal with Willson Contreras

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have signed young catcher Willson Contreras to a pre-arbitration salary of $604,500 for the 2018 season according to a report by MLB insider Jon Heyman.

Last season, Contreras had a salary of $554,500 and the Cubs have the 23-year old under player control for five more seasons. He will be an unrestricted free agent for the 2023 season.

In 2017, Contreras hit .276 with 21 homers, 74 RBI, and .356 on-base percentage. For his two-year major league career, he is batting .278 with 33 homers and 109 RBI.

During spring training this season, he is 5-for-14 with a homer and 1.000 OPS.

Contreras will continue to improve as he is already of the top catchers in the majors (regardless of what Yadier Molina thinks) and a true leader on the Cubs. Look for a big year out of Contreras this season as long as he can stay healthy.
