Cubs make several roster moves including Bryant to DL

LOS ANGELES – The Chicago Cubs today placed third baseman Kris Bryant on the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation (retroactive to June 23) and placed right-handed pitcher Justin Hancock on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Duane Underwood Jr. has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

In corresponding roster moves, right-handed pitchers Luke Farrell and Dillon Maples, as well as infielder David Bote, have been recalled from Triple-A Iowa. All three players will be available for the Cubs tonight as they continue their four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

Farrell, 27, has gone 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA (10 ER/20.0 IP) in 13 games, including one start, in two stints with the Cubs this season. He was previously on the active roster from April 20-May 6 and May 28-June 23, including a spot start on June 23 at Cincinnati. Earlier this season, he made five starts with Iowa, going 0-2 with a 4.94 ERA (13 ER/23.2 IP).

Maples, 26, has gone 2-2 with five saves and a 3.20 ERA (9 ER/25.1 IP) in 26 relief outings with Iowa this season. He has fanned 42 while walking 24 in 25.1 innings, and has limited opponents to a .170 average. In his last 12 outings since May 25, he’s allowed just one unearned run in 11.2 innings, walking seven, striking out 20 and holding the opponent to a .108 average and a .385 OPS. Maples, who wears uniform number 36, made his major league debut with Chicago in the final month of last season, allowing six runs in six relief outings (5.1 IP).

Bote, 25, returns to the majors for his third stint this season. He has batted .263 (5-for-19) with two doubles, one walk, five RBI and one run scored in eight games with the Cubs, including a double in his first at-bat, April 21 at Colorado. In 54 games with Iowa, Bote has hit .268 (56-for-209) with nine doubles, two triples, 12 homers and 38 RBI.

Bryant, 26, has batted .280 (74-for-264) with 20 doubles, three triples, nine homers and 36 RBI in 66 games this season. This marks his first-career stint on the disabled list.

Hancock, 27, has posted no record and a 1.46 ERA (2 ER/12.1 IP) in 10 relief outings with the Cubs. He retired the only batter he faced last night against the Dodgers. Hancock has spent most of the season with Iowa, going 2-2 with a 4.57 ERA (11 ER/21.2 IP) in 18 relief outings.

Underwood, 23, made his major league debut last night at Dodger Stadium. He allowed just one run, a second-inning solo homer, in 4.0 innings while striking out three batters. He has gone 3-7 with a 4.27 ERA (34 ER/71.2 IP) in 14 outings with Iowa, including 13 starts.
