Cubs option first baseman, expected to activate Rizzo

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have optioned first baseman Efren Navarro back to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday according to multiple reports.

Navarro played four games this season with a hit in six at-bats during his call-up to give some depth at first base.

Once the move becomes official on Monday, the team is expected to activate Anthony Rizzo from the 10-day disabled list for the series against the rival Cardinals.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said the following about Rizzo to the media on Saturday.

"If he is ready to roll, we’ll probably play him, I would imagine, but keep an eye on him," Maddon said.

During Rizzo's absence, the ballclub has played .500 ball at 4-4. His reinsertion into the heart of the lineup will only help the team try to get out of this early season funk.
