CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed outfielder Steven Souza Jr. on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to August 17) with a right hamstring strain and selected the contract of infielder Hernán Pérez from the club’s South Bend Alternate Site. To make room for Pérez on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher
Brad Wieck was transferred to the 45-day injured list.
Pérez, who will wear uniform number 41, will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their five-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. Pérez, 29, is a career .252 hitter (434-for-1,720) with 74 doubles, 45 home runs and 180 RBI in 638 major league games covering all or part of eight seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2012-15) and Milwaukee Brewers (2015-19). He saw action in 91 games with the Brewers last year, batting .228 (53-for-232) with eight home runs and 18 RBI. Pérez signed a minor league contract with an invitation to big league spring training with the Cubs last offseason. Overall, the versatile Pérez has played every defensive position at the big league level but catcher, seeing the most time at third base (211 games), second base (174 games), right field (100 games) and left field (75 games). Souza Jr., 31, is batting .190 (4-for-21) with two doubles, one homer and five RBI in nine games with the Cubs this year. Wieck, 28, was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 26 with a right hamstring strain but injured his left knee (meniscus) during his rehab process. Chicago’s 60-man Player Pool roster stands at 57 players, with 28 active players (plus four 10-day injured list players) in Chicago and 25 players in South Bend. Today’s #Cubs roster moves:
