Cubs reportedly interested in All-Star pitcher

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs will probably try to add some starting pitching depth before the trade deadline.

According to the latest report, the Cubs seem to have interest in lefty J.A. Happ who will be a free agent after the season. He might be the top rental pitcher that gets traded before the trade deadline.

The 35-year old was just named to his first All-Star nod on Sunday after pitching in the majors for 12 seasons. The veteran will be Blue Jays' only All-Star as he is putting together a decent year with a 4.44 ERA including 10 wins (fifth in AL) with 115 strikeouts.

Last season, he finished sixth in the American League Cy Young voting. In his last 88 starts, he has an impressive 3.43 ERA.

The Cubs, Yankees, Brewers, and Mariners are a few of the teams that are keeping an eye on Happ in recent weeks. Some of the Cubs prospects that have been reportedly looked at by the Blue Jays are outfielder Mark Zagunis, third baseman David Bote, and pitcher Jen-Ho Tseng.

So will the Cubs pull the trigger on adding some pitching before the trade deadline? I think its highly likely as the Cubs aren't sure what they have in starters Tyler Chatwood and Yu Darvish as we head to the All-Star break.
