Cubs reportedly scouting Mets pitcher

by - Senior Editor -

It's almost the All-Star break which means that many baseball teams are busily trying to improve their ballclubs via trade.

One of those teams is certainly the Chicago Cubs.

The New York Daily News is reporting that the Cubs did their due diligence and scouted Mets starting pitcher Zach Wheeler on Friday.

"The Yankees checked in on him Friday, as did scouts from eight other teams, including the Cubs, the Reds and Diamondbacks at his most recent start," NY Daily News said. "Interest from the Yankees was mild, according to sources with both teams, but the Diamondbacks came away from that outing interested in the 28-year-old right-hander, and the Reds plan to return for his scheduled start on Saturday."

For the season, Wheeler has a 2-6 record with a 4.42 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 99 strikeouts in 99.2 innings.

The 28-year old was drafted in the first round by the Giants in the 2009 Draft and will be a free agent after the 2019 season.
