Cubs News: Epstein on chances of re-signing Wade Davis

by - Senior Editor -

The winter meetings are underway in Orlando, Fl. this week and the Cubs are apparently discussing how to try to shore up their bullpen including the possibility of re-signing closer Wade Davis.

"We'll certainly engage with him (Davis), and he knows that we're not known for giving long, multiyear deals to relievers," President Theo Epstein said Monday at the Winter meetings. "But it's definitely worth talking."

"Things change quickly," he said. "So you don't want to panic and say, 'We have no closer coming in the next four years who's going to close games for us.' We have a really talented pen right now.

"We don't have someone we can fully count on in that role, but I know we will by the time we get ready to head for Arizona."

For the season, Davis had 32 saves with 2.30 ERA, 79 strikeouts, and 1.14 WHIP. His 32 saves ranked him fifth in the National League. In his career, he has 79 saves with 3.45 ERA.
