Fowler reportedly hasn't spoken with Cardinals manager in months

by - Senior Editor -

The relationship between Dexter Fowler and the Cardinals' organization appears to be headed towards a divorce sooner than later.

The latest report by the Athletic is that Fowler and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny have not spoken with each other in months. How in the world does that happen? You guys share a dugout, and that has be awkward being in such close quarters together on a daily basis.

Cardinals executive John Mozeliak suggested in a recent interview that Fowler might not be giving his all-out effort on the baseball diamond.

"It's been a frustrating year for everybody involved," Mozeliak said. "Here's a guy who wants to go out and play well. I think he would tell you it's hard to do that when you're not playing on a consistent basis. But I've also had a lot of people come up to me and question his effort and his energy level. You know, those are things that I can't defend."

Fowler heard about the remarks and made his first public response.

"My effort has always been there,” Fowler said. "That’s out of the question. These guys in here know. They’re the ones texting me, saying it’s bull****. I’m playing as hard as I can."

This relationship between Fowler and the Cardinals management appear to be almost finished as both parties seem incredibly salty publicly towards each other. Theoretically, he could one day be back with the Cubs in a limited bench role if they decide to cut ties with him in St. Louis.
