Heyward bought a hotel suite on the road for the entire year so Ross' whole family including wife Hyla and children Landri (7), Cole (6) and Harper (1) could be in attendance comfortably during Ross' final major league season.
Heyward was 19 when Ross, 32, took him under his wings as a mentor and a teammate for the Atlanta Braves.
"I know how special it is to have teammates like he was my first three years in Atlanta. You don’t take it for granted,” Heyward told Bleacher Report. "I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart, as a teammate and as a friend, for what he’s done for me."
Ross tried to protest the expensive gift but it was already purchased, and the tears started flowing from the veteran catcher.
"He sent me a long text back, talking about all I had done for him, and he wouldn't be where he is without me," Ross said.
