Cubs News: Javy Baez injury update

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — In the midst of the Chicago Cubs' demolition of the Miami Marlins, Cubs second baseman Javier Baez got injured attempting to make a play at second base.

Stretching out in the top of the seventh to catch a throw from third baseman Kris Bryant, Baez appeared to be in a lot of pain after the play. Squatting down, walking uncomfortably and looking disconcerted, Baez left the game after being examined by a trainer.

Morning Update: It was later announced that Baez left because of right groin tightness. While the injury could be minor, Baez did appear to be in noticeable pain after suffering the injury, so it will certainly be something worth keeping an eye on in the coming days.

Be prepared mentally if Baez has to land on the disabled list. He has been raking this season, as he currently leads the National League in RBI.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon had the following to say about Baez's injury in his postgame interview with the media.

"When I went out there, he didn't say specifically where (he was hurt). He just said it was tight. There was no sense to leave him in the game right there. I don't think the injury is anything awful."
