Cubs News: Kris Bryant injury update

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs franchise third baseman Kris Bryant was hit with a 96 MPH fastball that ricocheted off the brim of his helmet during Sunday's wild win against the Colorado Rockies.

During the crazy scene, Cubs hitting coach Chilli Davis and assistant hitting coach Andy Haines were ejected for their actions in the dugout as Bryant was helped off the field by the training staff.

After everything calmed down, Cubs officials said following the game that Bryant passed the concussion test and only had a laceration above is eye due to the impact of the baseball to his sunglasses. He was not available for post-game interviews, so everyone waited to hear an update. Well, terrific news for Bryant fans as he is OK.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon was on 670 The Score's "Bernstein and McKnight show" on Tuesday afternoon and said that Bryant is "fine" and believe it's "50-50" whether he will be in the lineup tonight.

"It's about processing it properly," Maddon said. "It's about you. It's about how you feel about it. I think it's important to get back in there as quickly as you possibly can. You got to fasten that seat belt."

That is excellent news for Cubs nation because it could have been so much worse and it appears that he will have no issues moving forward besides possibly missing today's game. I'm not so sure I would be jumping for joy to get in the batter's box after getting plunked in the head with a 96 MPH fastball, but I'm not a talented professional athlete either.

Bryant is not in tonight's lineup against the Cleveland Indians even though he took batting practice today.

For the season, Bryant is hitting .319 with two homers, 11 RBIs, and 1.003 OPS.

FYI: One other tidbit from Maddon's appearance on the radio is that Almora and Baez will bat 1-2 again tonight and more than likely use Ian Happ as a DH.

Check out the scary video of him getting plunked:
