Newcomer Yu Darvish had his highly anticipated debut with the Chicago Cubs in Tuesday's Cactus League action.
Darvish went two innings, giving up one earned run and zero hits, while striking out four batters, allowing two wild pitches, and two walks. He told reporters after the game that he was nervous how he would perform since he had some weight loss during the offseason. However, it appears that he was happy with the results since he didn't allow a single hit to his former team. It's the first time facing batters in the stadium, so I was a little scared, but that's how I feel every season," Darvish said. One positive note for the Cubs and Darvish is that his velocity on his fastball was clocked at a healthy 95 MPH. For the 2017 season, he was 10-12 with 3.86 ERA with 209 strikeouts and 1.16 WHIP.
