Cubs News: Latest extension talk info concerning Javy Baez

by - Senior Editor -

Great news for El Mago fans!

The Chicago Cubs are reportedly starting negotiation talks on a long-term extension with shortstop Javier Baez according to the Chicago Sun-Times on Friday.

"It’s the first big step in knowing what their financial landscape might look like not only for this winter but for planning their strategy for the next several years," Gordon Wittenmyer said in his latest article.

"A deal is considered much more feasible to reach with Baez than the team’s other high profile superstar within two years of free agency, Kris Bryant. That doesn’t mean the Cubs will suddenly trade Bryant if they can’t reach an agreement with him – especially if they get agreeable terms with Baez. But it certainly would keep Bryant’s status in play throughout the winter, then possibly at the trade deadline and again next winter, barring a move before then."

The 26-year old hit .281 with 29 homers and 85 RBIs last season and currently has two years left of control with the ballclub before he hits free agency.

For his career, he is a .270 hitter with 110 home runs and 354 RBIs.
