Cubs News: Maddon fires back on 'hot seat' rumors

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs are getting down to the final stretch of games in the regular season as the team is playing solid ball with a current six-game winning streak.

However, not all is peachy in Cubs land according to the following report.

USA TODAY senior writer Bob Nightengale said that Maddon might be on the hot seat if the Cubs don't make it far this season.

"Maddon wants to continue managing, but if the Cubs fail to make the playoffs, or go out quickly, his fate is tenuous, several baseball executives told USA TODAY on the condition of anonymity," Nightengale said. "The executives did not want to speak publicly about Maddon's situation."

Maddon heard about the article referring to his possible future and completely dismissed the report.

"Any time I have to worry about what Bob Nightengale writes or what anybody else writes, then I should just pretty much hang things up anyway,” Maddon said. “It means nothing. That is actually dumb. It’s hard to comment on something — a lot of times these guys write things in order to get a reaction and they’re looking to further this or get hits online, whatever you want to call it."

Maddon actually knows Nightengale well and thinks he is wrong.

"I know Bob really well. I have no idea why he would write something like that, but it really doesn’t impact me whatsoever. It’s just something to write, and I can’t really be concerned about it."
