Cubs News: Maddon updates Anthony Rizzo's back injury

by - Senior Editor -

Good news to report on the health of star first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon was pretty positive with his comments about Rizzo during Friday morning's media interview.

"He's doing really well. I think he could play today if it was necessary and there weren't the restrictions of the DL," Maddon said.

Rizzo has taken batting practice the last two days and is eligible to come off the disabled list on Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Rizzo has been very durable the last few years with playing at least 155 games in each of the previous three seasons and he has only been on the DL once (2004) in his entire career.

For the season in 28 at-bats, Rizzo is batting only .107 (3-for-28) with a homer and three RBIs.

Youngster Victor Caratini and utility man Ben Zobrist have been filling in at first base during Rizzo's absence. Kris Bryant will get his first start at first base in today's contest against the Braves.
