Cubs News: Report: Chapman seeks five-year deal worth $100 million

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs won their first World Series title since 1908 and one of the reasons was closer Aroldis Chapman's play down the stretch and in the postseason.

However, it looks like the Cubs and Chapman will go their separate ways after the short-term rental.

According to multiple reports, Chapman is looking for a five-year deal worth $100 million dollars from a ballclub. If he gets this sum, he would be the highest-paid closer in major league baseball. This more than likely prices the Cubs out of the market as they will have to conserve their money to pay some of their talented younger players in the near future.

The San Francisco Giants are currently meeting with Chapman's representatives on Wednesday night. They are in desperate need of some bullpen help with their MLB-leading blown saves this past season.

Two other teams that could pay this type of contract would be the Dodgers and the Yankees.

Chapman was 4-1 with a 1.55 ERA with 36 saves and 90 strikeouts during the regular season in 2016. In the postseason in 15.2 innings, he had a 3.45 ERA with four saves while striking out 21.

For his career, he has a 2.08 ERA with 182 saves and 636 strikeouts.
