Report: Cubs finalist in the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes

by - Senior Editor -

Big news in the Giancarlo Stanton trade sweepstakes.

The Chicago Cubs are one of four teams that the slugger would allow being traded to alongside the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros according to multiple reports.

Previously, the Giants and the Cardinals worked out a deal for Stanton, but he nixed those two teams with his use of his no-trade clause. Staton reportedly wants to play for a winner and doesn't want to be part of any rebuild.

The Cubs getting Stanton is a longshot but it is interesting that most star players want to play in Chicago now instead of in the past when it was not the place to be. However, anything is possible under the leadership of Theo Epstein but the Cubs would have to have a legit plan moving forward of unloading Jason Heyward's huge contract with the possible addition of Stanton.

In 2017, Stanton batted .281 with 59 homers, 132 RBIs, 123 runs, 1.007 OPS and .376 on-base percentage as he won the National League MVP Award. He led the league in homers, extra-base hits, and slugging percentage.

For his career, he is batting .268 with 267 home runs and 672 RBIs.

Stanton is owed $295 million over the next ten years of his massive contract including $25 million in 2018.
