Report: Giants interested in trading for Jason Heyward

by - Senior Editor -

Free agency is open and teams are also busy talking about different trades that could help their play in 2018 and beyond. According to multiple reports, the Giants have interest in gold glove right fielder Jason Heyward.

The trade would center around former Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija and reliever Mark Melancon. The addition of Samardzija at the back of the Cubs rotation could be a rebirth for his pitching career and any reliever that the Cubs can gain like Melancon would be a welcome addition.

In 2017, Heyward batted .259 with 11 homers, 59 RBI, and .326 on-base percentage. For his career, Heyward is batting .262 with 115 dingers and 460 RBI. Heyward still has six years left on his contract worth $147.5 million.

Samardzija has three years remaining at $54 million while Melancon has three years left for $38 million with the Giants.

All three players have no-trade clauses (Samardzija no-trade with 22 teams) that could make the deal difficult to finalize even if both clubs agree to a deal.
