Cubs News: Schwarber on batting leadoff: "I just wasn’t me"

by - Senior Editor -

Kyle Schwarber feels like himself again in 2018.

The young slugger is batting .270 with 3 homers and five RBIs this season after a horrendous 2017 season in which he batted .211 and was eventually demoted to the minors in the middle of the season.

Schwarber was asked if he would bat leadoff again this year after the failed experiment last season.

"It’s weird," Schwarber told the media on Thursday. "Last year I experienced leadoff, and it was different for me because I just wasn’t me last year. And it’s so early in the year right now that people want to come to quick judgments on things (Ian Happ at leadoff), and it’s just that there’s still 150 games left.

"There’s a lot of things to be figured out throughout the year. I’m really comfortable with our guys who are doing it right now."

Hopefully, Maddon won't EVER put Schwarber back in the leadoff position again but I have a feeling we will see it at some point this season.

Schwarber said that social media can be brutal when you are not playing well as a professional athlete.

"Taxing thing on the game,’’ Schwarber said. "It’s part of the game now,’’ he said. "It’s part of the younger generation of people with social media and putting out messages. I think it’s something you have to put in the back of your mind."
