Cubs News: Theo Epstein on lack of extension talks with Anthony Rizzo

Cubs President of Operations Theo Epstein clarified the situation regarding the team's extension talks or lack thereof regarding fan-favorite Anthony Rizzo during a media session with reporters at the Winter Meetings.

“It’s not the outcome they were looking for,” Epstein said in an interview with ESPN Chicago. “I understand if there is the potential for hurt feelings. It’s not always going to be high-fives and celebrations. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Epstein still believes that Rizzo is a vital part of the future with the Cubs.

“I think he’s a big part of the next chapter in the solution,” Epstein said. “We’ll leave the clubhouse dynamic to (manager David Ross) and the players and confident that’s going to go very well, and Anthony will be a big part of that.”

Epstein has a lot going on and hopes they can get to more in-depth talks with Rizzo's agent down the line.

“We’re thrilled about it, and there are lots of opportunities to talk about continuing the relationship,” Epstein said. “More generally, when there’s common ground on length, there can be deeper conversations, and that’s usually more typical when you get closer to free agency.”

Rizzo will be a free agent after the 2021 season.
