Cubs News: Umpire admits he missed call that Maddon got tossed on |
Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon explained his thought process after he was ejected after a controversial overturned strikeout call by Curtis Granderson on Wednesday night.
"That can't happen," Maddon said in his post-game press conference on Wednesday night. "The process was horrible. If Granderson hits the next pitch out I might come running out of the clubhouse with my jock strap. It was really that bad. You can't permit that to happen." Home plate umpire Jim Wolf was able to watch the replay on Wednesday night and agreed that he missed the call. "After looking at it (on replay afterward), I was dead wrong," Wolf admitted via WGN-TV. "I talked myself into the whole thing." "I basically talked myself into 'he did foul tip it,'" Wolf said. Maddon said the umpires based their reversal on two sounds they heard. "The process was wrong," he said. "The explanation was eventually hearing two sounds. Not one of them saw a foul tip. It was based on two sounds which I totally can not agree with that process whatsoever when you got 40,000 people and it is late in the game. The other sound could have from some lady screaming in the first row." The Cubs will face another elimination game against the Dodgers at Wrigley Field on Thursday night at 7 p.m. CDT.
