Update on Jason Heyward rumor to Giants

by - Senior Editor -

According to multiple reports this week, the Giants had interest in gold glove right fielder Jason Heyward.

The trade would center around former Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija and reliever Mark Melancon. The addition of Samardzija at the back of the Cubs rotation could be a rebirth for his pitching career, and any reliever that the Cubs can gain like Melancon would be a welcome addition.

However, the latest on these rumors is that there is zero chance that the Giants take on Heyward's contract.

"Giants people seem as baffled by Heyward/Cubs rumor as the rest of us," NBC Sports Bay Area posted. "Zero chance of that deal. Welcome to the offseason."

It appears that this rumor doesn't have legs to stand on, but maybe the two teams are privately discussing something behind closed doors. Usually, when there is smoke, there is fire.

Heyward has been a hot hitter at AT&T Park batting .397 with six homers in 73 plate appearances.

It is an interesting debate as a majority of Cubs fans desire management to move Heyward because of his light-hitting and massive contract while some Cubs fans prioritize defense plus team chemistry and want him to stay on the North Side.

In 2017, Heyward batted .259 with 11 homers, 59 RBI, and .326 on-base percentage. For his career, Heyward is hitting .262 with 115 dingers and 460 RBI. Heyward still has six years left on his contract worth $147.5 million.

The offseason is going to be filled with exciting moves for the Cubs but possibly nothing to do with Heyward and his albatross of a contract. Three Cubs players to keep your eye on a potential blockbuster trade is Kyle Schwarber, Addison Russell, and/or Javy Baez for quality young pitchers.
