CHICAGO — Starting at shortstop because of an injury to Addison Russell, Chicago Cubs infielder Javier Baez channeled all-time great shortstop Derek Jeter with a spectacular play in the ninth inning of the Cubs' matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

In the top of the ninth, Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera hit a popup down the left-field line. Giving chase, the speedy Baez went all out in his attempt at catching the ball. Tumbling over the short brick wall separating the bleachers from the field, Baez somehow snagged the fly ball for an out.

Baez's feat was reminiscent of the signature play made by Jeter in a 2001 game between his New York Yankees and the opposing Boston Red Sox. Known as "The Dive," the iconic highlight featured Jeter flying into the stands in foul territory near third base while catching a foul ball.

Jeter emerged from the stands bloodied and bruised, but Baez was lucky enough to escape injury. Instead, Baez simply flashed his signature grin at his teammates after pulling off the unbelievable web gem. Baez exemplified why he is one of the most exciting players in baseball by producing the superb highlight, fully living up to his "El Mago" nickname in the process.
