WATCH: Baez drives in winning run with insane bunt on safety squeeze

by - Senior Writer -

WASHINGTON, D.C. — When a pitch is chest-high, a batter does not typically opt to square around and attempt to lay down a bunt. But Chicago Cubs infielder Javier "El Mago" Baez is not the typical batter. Squaring around to bunt at the last second, Baez tallied a bunt single off Washington Nationals closer Sean Doolittle in the top of the 10th on Thursday to drive home Kris Bryant and provide the Cubs with a 4-3 lead.

What served as Baez's 103rd RBI of the season also served as the winning hit, with Baez motoring down the baseline for a single as part of a safety squeeze. Bryant scored with ease on the play, as the Nationals were seemingly caught off the guard. The deep bunt, which nearly reached the dirt between first and second base through the air, was not fielded cleanly, paving the way for the Cubs to top the Nationals 4-3 in extra innings.
