WATCH: Baez hammers go-ahead home run after questionable call

by - Senior Writer -

Leading off the bottom of the eighth on Saturday, Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez put the North Siders ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 on a 413-foot blast out to right. Interestingly enough, a questionable ruling that did not go Baez's way set up the homer.

A few pitches prior to going yard, Baez skied a popup down the right-field line that was ruled foul after Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong attempted a sliding catch that resulted in the ball ricocheting off his glove. The ball was ruled foul, but it appeared that Wong might have touched the ball while it was directly above the line. The Cubs challenged the call, but the ruling stood.

The umpiring decision worked out for the Cubs, though, as Baez lifted a fastball thrown by Cardinals reliever John Brebbia into the Wrigley Field seats soon after hitting the controversial foul ball. The go-ahead blast marked Baez's 11th dinger and 26th RBI of the year.
