SAN DIEGO — Moving into a tie for first place in terms of RBI accrued by a National League player, Chicago Cubs second baseman Javier Baez collected five RBI as part of a 2-5 plate performance against the San Diego Padres on Saturday. Three of the five RBI came on a ninth-inning dinger that carried 387 feet and over the wall in right-center field at Petco Park.

Slated to compete in the Home Run Derby in a few days, Baez got quite the practice swing in with his three-run blast off Padres reliever Phil Hughes, which marked his 19th round-tripper of the season. Boasting a launch angle of 33 degrees and an exit velocity of 105 miles per hour, the home run provided Baez with the outright team lead in home runs after left fielder Kyle Schwarber hit his 18th home run to tie Baez earlier in the game. Furthermore, with 71 RBI on the year, Baez is even with Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez atop the National League RBI leaderboard.
