WATCH: Cardinals announcer trolls himself with horribly timed Kolten Wong hot take

CHICAGO — Since joining the St. Louis Cardinals' broadcasting team in recent years, longtime commentator and former Cardinals catcher Tim McCarver has consistently stuck his foot in his mouth while calling games featuring the Chicago Cubs. Bad timing has been at the crux of several of McCarver's mishaps, and he suffered yet another broadcasting gaffe of the same ilk with the Cardinals battling the Cubs on Friday.

Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong, who is a solid defensive player, has touted himself in recent weeks as the rightful winner of the Gold Glove Award at second base in the National League, rather than star Cubs second baseman Javier Baez. While discussing why Wong should win the award over Baez, who has split time between second base, shortstop and third base this season, McCarver was made to look like a fool when Wong suffered a rare mistake.

Committing a fielding error on a routine grounder hit in between first and second base by Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward, Wong allowed Heyward to reach safely and also enabled the two runners already on base to advance, including Ben Zobrist, who came in to score on the play. Perhaps, Wong committing his ninth error of the season was the baseball gods' way of revealing to McCarver that Baez is the rightful recipient of the Gold Glove.
