WATCH: Contreras ignores stop sign, motors from first to home to give Cubs lead

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras took a page out of Cubs second baseman Javier Baez's book with a display of tenacious base running against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Going from first to home to put the Cubs up 1-0, Contreras completely ignored a stop sign from third-base coach Brian Butterfield after noticing the Diamondbacks' lax defense.

On a lined single to right field by left fielder Kyle Schwarber, Contreras made it to third base quite easily. However, upon noticing the lackadaisical throw from Arizona right fielder Steven Souza, Jr., which avoided the cutoff man and instead was lofted into the infield, Contreras decided to go home.

Sliding in headfirst, Contreras beat out a potential tag and was visibly pumped up after scoring the first run of the game by way of his gutsy base-running decision.
