WATCH: Happ smacks homer off Bumgarner for 5th homer of spring

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ is making a statement during spring training.

Happ smacked a homer to left center field to lead off the game against veteran starter Madison Bumgarner in the bottom of the first inning. It was the second homer off of Bumgarner for Happ this spring and fifth overall. He also has three leadoff homers to pace the ballclub.

Overall, he is 10-for-26 (.385 average) with five homers, nine RBIs, two steals, and impressive 1.582 OPS. If Joe Maddon wants a sparkplug at the top of the order, he has found his man in Happ.

The Cubs ended up winning the game 2-1 against the Giants in front of a record crowd of 15,849 fans.
