WATCH: Heyward leaves game with injury after diving catch attempt

by - Senior Writer -

ATLANTA — Taking on his old club, Chicago Cubs right fielder Jason Heyward got injured in the fifth inning of a game against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

Laying out for an attempted diving catch in center field, Heyward came up empty-handed on a two-run triple by Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman in the top of the fifth. Slow to get up, Heyward left the game with what appeared to be a lower-body injury.

Adding insult to injury, the Braves tied the game at 3-3 on the Freeman triple and took a 4-3 lead soon afterward. Heyward, who played for Atlanta from 2010 through 2014, was able to jog off the field at SunTrust Park under his own power, so, hopefully, he will be okay moving forward.

Update: The Cubs announced later on in the game that Heyward was under evaluation for right hamstring tightness.
