WATCH: Highlights from Cubs' 10-4 beatdown of Buccos

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — Saturday's contest at Wrigley Field between the Chicago Cubs (49-43) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (44-47) was essentially over not long after it began, as the Cubs plated seven runs in the bottom of the first and never faced a threat from the Buccos thereafter. Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lester was solid on the bump but even better at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 and tabbed three RBI for the second time in his career.

Lester drove home two runs with a deep single in the first frame and proceeded to go yard in the third inning for his first home run of the season. The left-hander also struck out six in his 6 2/3 innings of work en route to receiving the winning decision. The Cubs defeated the Pirates by a final score of 10-4 to improve to 2-0 through the first two installments of the 3-game set, thereby assuring the Cubs of their first series victory since early June.
