WATCH: Highlights from Cubs' thrilling extra-innings victory versus Nationals |
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Thanks to a gutsy safety squeeze in the 10th inning, the Chicago Cubs (85-61) pulled out a victory on the road over the Washington Nationals (74-73) on Thursday. Winning 4-3 in a makeup game that was put into place following a rainout on Sunday, the Cubs topped the Nationals by way of a brave bunt by Javier Baez that plated Kris Bryant in the top of the 10th. Bryant, who went 3-5 with a bat in his hands, set up the winning play with a double a few at-bats prior.
Tallying 10 hits and four walks, the Cubs were fairly effective at the plate on the day, with Baez leading the charge via his 3-4 outing. In addition to driving home the winning run on the bunt single in extra innings, Baez also walloped a solo home run into the Nationals' bullpen during the sixth inning. Baez increased his season homer total to 31 and season RBI total to 103 in the Chicago win.
