WATCH: Highlights of Cubs-Royals series finale, including comical error by Russell

by - Senior Writer -

KANSAS CITY — Perfectly epitomizing the disastrous night experienced by the Chicago Cubs (66-48) in their embarrassing 9-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals (35-79), Cubs shortstop Addison Russell was unable to stop himself from throwing the ball after considering a throw home in the midst of a four-run eighth inning by the Royals.

Once he received the relay throw from the outfield on an RBI double hit by Kansas City's Jorge Bonifacio, Russell nearly threw home but stopped when he noticed the lead runner holding at third base. However, Russell could not bring his throwing arm safely back down to his side without accidentally throwing the ball directly into the ground, where it then bounced away from him. The comical error resulted in another run scoring on the play and contributed to the Cubs' first shutout loss since June 17.
