WATCH: Highlights of Cubs' battle with Padres, including amazing slide by Contreras

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — Falling 6-1 at home against the San Diego Padres (43-68), the Chicago Cubs (62-46) were outmatched in every facet of the game on Thursday. Giving up 15 hits while mustering only three hits of their own, the Cubs were rather listless in the opener of the four-game set.

One of the few highlights of the game for the Cubs involved their only run scored, as catcher Willson Contreras used his athleticism on an unorthodox headfirst slide attempt to put the Cubs up 1-0 in the fifth inning. Contorting his body and sliding around the mitt of Padres catcher Austin Hedges, Contreras was initially called out but was ruled safe after a Cubs challenge, which revealed that Contreras was indeed able to touch home plate with his right hand prior to being tagged.
