CHICAGO — Featuring a combined 15 runs and 28 hits, the Chicago Cubs (56-38) and the St. Louis Cardinals (48-47) returned from the All-Star break with a bang on Thursday. Scoring five runs in the fifth inning, the Cubs overcame a 2-0 deficit to go on and defeat the rival Redbirds at home by a final tally of 9-6.

Marking the opener of a five-game series, Chicago's 9-6 win also served as the first of eight meetings between the Cardinals and the Cubs over the course of the next week and a half. Having played nine games against one another thus far this season, St. Louis leads the season series over Chicago 5-4.
