WATCH: Russell scores winning run due to defensive disaster

by - Senior Writer -

SAN FRANCISCO — Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell provided his team with a lead that it did not relinquish against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. However, if not for two costly mistakes by the Giants, the run would not have been scored.

Taking advantage of a wild pitch by Giants reliever Sam Dyson, Russell, who hit a double earlier in the inning, hustled to third base. Giants catcher Nick Hundley, who was unable to handle the pitch in the dirt from Dyson, hurried a throw to third base in an attempt at gunning down Russell.

Russell slid in safely, though, and, even if the throw were accurate, he likely would have beaten it anyway. But the throw, which was scored as an error, was well off the mark, and as it sailed down the left-field line, Russell trotted home to put the Cubs up 1-0 and set the stage for their eventual 2-0 win.
