WATCH: Umpire endures crotch shot on bad pitch

KANSAS CITY — In the sixth inning of the Chicago Cubs' Monday night matchup with the Kansas City Royals, a pitch in the dirt by Cubs starter Cole Hamels bounced by Cubs catcher Willson Contreras and hit home-plate umpire Mark Ripperger in a rather sensitive area.

Barreling over in pain after experiencing a brutal crotch shot on the errant pitch, Ripperger was comforted by an empathetic Contreras, who assuredly knows the horrific sensation of getting drilled in the groin by a baseball.

Hamels meanwhile, came out smelling like a rose, as he went unscathed by his mistake and even got Royals hitter Jorge Bonifacio to swing at the pitch off the bounce for a strike. Fortunately, Ripperger was able to shake off the pain and retake his position behind the plate.
