Cubs News: Willson Contreras injury update |
CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs catcher
Willson Contreras suffered a hamstring injury as he darted out of the batter's box in the seventh inning on Saturday. During the course of the Cubs' 4-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field, Contreras came up lame while racing down the first baseline and was visibly upset after slowly walking back to the dugout.
Contreras was replaced behind the plate by Victor Caratini and was shown on camera crying while sitting on the dugout bench before a trainer escorted him to the locker room. Cubs manager Joe Maddon discussed the injury after the game and ruled out Contreras for Sunday's game, telling the media that the All-Star backstop would undergo an MRI on Monday. Maddon listed the injury as a strain of the right hamstring and did not go into details regarding a transaction that could be made in order to address the Cubs' catching situation. Since former Cubs catcher Martin Maldonado was traded to the Houston Astros at the trade deadline, Caratini is the only healthy catcher remaining on the Cubs' active roster, meaning that the Cubs could look to call up or sign a catcher prior to Sunday's contest.
