Cubs News: Yu Darvish injury update

by - Senior Writer -

DALLAS — After experiencing a setback in a bullpen session earlier this week, Chicago Cubs starting pitcher visited one of his former team doctors with the Texas Rangers, Dr. Keith Meister, in Dallas to have his throwing arm evaluated.

Darvish, who is currently battling back from a triceps injury that landed him on the disabled list, received fairly positive news. Getting diagnosed with an elbow impingement, as well as inflammation, Darvish received a cortisone shot to ease the pain and swelling. Darvish will now spend the next three to five days recovering before taking up throwing again.

The diagnosis was certainly not as severe as it could have been, as impingement of the elbow is essentially minor wear and tear caused by excessive motion. However, it indicates that Darvish's throwing elbow, which Darvish underwent Tommy John surgery on in 2015, may have been injured as a result of Darvish's intensive rehab.

Plainly and simply, Darvish has not been his usual self in his first season with the Cubs, and he has also been fairly injury-prone. Perhaps, his insistence on rehabbing the triceps injury has aggravated a previous elbow issue.

Therefore, his return might be best-suited for later in the season, instead of the current timeline of a week from now. The elbow issue will certainly be something worth monitoring if Darvish were to return to the mound in the near future.
