Yu Darvish reportedly thinks Cubs fans 'hate him'

by - Senior Editor -

Cubs starter Yu Darvish is currently on the 10-day DL with inflammation in his right triceps.

The 31-year old signed a lucrative six-year contract worth $126 million with the Cubs in the offseason to replace former standout Jake Arrieta in the starting rotation.

However, it has not been a dream season as he hasn't pitched to his capabilities and has already been on the disabled list two times this season.

For the season, he has a 1-3 record with 4.95 ERA, 49 strikeouts, and 1.43 WHIP.

It's always hard to try to replace a fan favorite from a given team as comparisons are always made throughout the season.

His long-time teammate and one-time personal catcher Chris Gimenez had some insight on Darvish's mental state after having a tough few months on the North Side.

"I think he thinks that Chicago hates him for going on the DL a couple of times,” Gimenez said to the Chicago Sun-Times. "I’ve tried to portray to him, ‘Listen, they’re going to love you when we get to October and we’re doing the things that we all want to do here, you’re the main reason we’re doing it and we’re riding you all the way through it."

Gimenez thinks that everything will be fine once he starts pitching better later in the season.

"So don’t worry about them getting mad at you on Twitter in May. Worry about when we get to September, October and they’re chanting your name."

Gimenez shares that Darvish reads Twitter and reacts poorly to some of the negative fans.

"He reads Twitter. He reads all that stuff," Gimenez said. "We all do. Honestly, I know it upsets him — and rightfully so."
