Cubs to pay luxury tax for first time

MLB announced that six major league teams will have to pay luxury tax this season with the Los Angeles Dodgers ($31.8 million), New York Yankees ($27.4 million), Boston Red Sox ($4.5 million), San Francisco Giants ($3.4 million), and the Chicago Cubs ($2.96 million).

Chicago had a payroll of $182 million and will pay $2.96 million at the 17.5 percent bracket for being first-time offenders. The check is due on Jan. 21 at the commissioner's office.

The luxury tax threshold increases to $195 million for next season due to the new labor contract.
