Cubs News: Schwarber out for the season

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs announced on Friday that left fielder Kyle Schwarber will miss the remainder of the season due to full tears of his right ACL and LCL and a severely sprained ankle.

The MRI revealed the tears on Friday.

Schwarber hit .246 with 16 home runs and 43 RBIs in 69 games last year.

Cubs Manager Joe Maddon said Tommy La Stella and Jorge Soler would see time in Schwarber's absence and third baseman Kris Bryant possibly playing more outfield.

Cubs have called up infielder Munenori Kawasaki to take Schwarber's roster spot.

In the second inning against the Diamondbacks on Thursday night, center fielder Dexter Fowler and Schwarber collided going after Jean Segura's deep fly ball to left-center field. Schwarber would have to be carted off with a left leg injury.

According to the Cubs medical staff on early Friday morning, Schwarber has a sprained left ankle, and the initial x-rays were negative.
