Contreras on homer: 'My dream comes true'

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs rookie catcher Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer to center field in his first major league at-bat on Sunday night in the 10-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The previous two Cubs with homers in their first plate appearance were Jorge Soler (8/27/2014) and Starlin Castro (5/7/2010).

"My dream come true," Contreras said to reporters after the game. "I'm still in the high sky. I can't believe it. This is an amazing feeling. Incredible. I don't have words to explain how happy I am."

Contreras received a curtain call after the impressive power display and went to help warm-up pitchers in the bullpen after the inning.

"That was funny," Contreras said. "After I hit a home run, they said, ‘Hey, I know you're happy, but you have to go to the bullpen.'"

He was batting a sizzling .350 with 16 doubles, nine homers and 43 RBIs for the Iowa Cubs this season. For his minor league career, he was batting .283 with 39 home runs and 282 RBIs.
