MILWAUKEE – The Chicago Cubs today selected the contracts of right-handed pitchers Tyler Duffey and Shane Greene from Triple-A Iowa and recalled infielder
Jared Young from the Arizona Complex League. In corresponding moves, right-handed pitcher
Hayden Wesneski and left-handed pitcher
Jordan Wicks have been optioned to the Arizona Complex League and infielder
Nico Hoerner has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 30) with a left knee contusion.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Duffey (who will wear uniform number 65) and Greene, right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer and infielder Nick Madrigal have been transferred to the 60-day injured list. Duffey, 32, was signed by the Cubs to a minor league contract in January 2023. The right-handed pitcher went 4-1 with a 3.47 ERA (19 ER/49.1 IP) in 39 combined games (two starts) with Triple-A Iowa and the Arizona Complex League this season. Duffey held opponents to a .173 average (29-for-168) and a 1.07 WHIP in 2023. From August 19-Sept. 12, he made nine-straight scoreless appearances (9.2 IP), allowing four hits and walking two with 14 strikeouts during the span. A Houston, Texas, native, Duffey is 29-27 with a 4.57 ERA (241 ER/475.0 IP) and six saves in 295 career major league games (37 starts). Originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the fifth round of the 2012 draft out of Rice University, Duffey spent the 2012-22 seasons in the Twins organization, making his major league debut in 2015. The righthander went 6-2 with a 2.31 ERA 921 ER/81.2 IP) and 113 strikeouts in 80 relief appearances for the Twins from 2019-20. Greene, 34, signed a minor league contract with Chicago June 25 and had his contract selected September 1, making one scoreless appearance (1.0 IP) with the Cubs before he was outrighted September 8. In nine games (seven starts) with Iowa, Greene went 2-1 with a 1.75 ERA (5 ER/25.2 IP). The six-foot four-inch Greene is 34-37 with a 4.52 ERA (237 ER/471.2 IP) and 67 saves in 344 career major league games (33 starts) in all or part of nine major league seasons with the Yankees (2014, 2022), Tigers (2015-19), Braves (2019-21), Dodgers (2021-22) and Cubs (2023). He was a 2019 American League All-Star with Detroit and posted a 1.18 ERA (5 ER/38.0 IP) with 22 saves in 38 relief appearances before he was traded to Atlanta at the deadline. Young, 28, is 8-for-39 (.205) with three triples, two home runs and eight RBI in 15 games in two stints with the Cubs this season. The left-handed hitting Young batted .310 (96-for-310) with 16 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs and 72 RBI in 90 games for Iowa this season, collecting 50 walks to contribute to a .995 OPS. Selected by Chicago in the 15th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Old Dominion University, Young made his major league debut in 2022. In parts of six minor league seasons, Young owns a .269 (539-for-2,007) hitter with 98 doubles, 16 triples, 69 home runs and 319 RBI in 553 career minor league games spanning six seasons. He was the Cubs Minor League Player of the Year in 2018, combining to hit .300 (134-for-477) with an .842 OPS in 120 games between Single-A South Bend and Myrtle Beach. Hoerner, 26, batted .283 (175-for-619) with 27 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, 68 RBI and a team-leading 43 stolen bases in 150 games for the Cubs this season. Wesneski, 25, went 2-5 with a 4.72 ERA (46 ER/87.2 IP) in 33 games (11 starts) for Chicago this year, his second in the organization. Wicks, 24, pitched to a 4-1 record with a 3.00 ERA (11 ER/33.0 IP) in six starts for Chicago, his first season in the majors after starting the year with Double-A Tennessee. Fulmer, 30, landed on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain on September 16. He went 3-5 with two saves and a 4.42 ERA (28 ER/57.0 IP) in 58 games, all but one as a reliever, with Chicago this season. Madrigal, 26, was placed on the 10-day injured list September 17 with a right hamstring strain. He batted .263 (71-for-270) with 16 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 28 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 92 games for Chicago this season. #Cubs roster moves:
