Cubs News: Christopher Morel will start season at Triple-A Iowa

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have made the difficult decision to demote promising young player Christopher Morel to Triple-A Iowa for the start of the season. The news was announced by Cubs President Jed Hoyer on Monday.

“We just want him to get as many at-bats as possible,” Hoyer said.

More hit .235 with 16 homers and 47 RBIs in 113 games as a rookie last season.

“He’s got to get at-bats, he’s got to play,” Hoyer said. “Having him on the bench and playing once a series or getting three at-bats a series doesn’t make any sense for his development. You use everyone during the course of the season. He’s going to help us a ton, but making sure he gets off to a good start, is playing a lot, playing well, that’s the most important thing. And then when we have a need where he’s going to play a lot, then we can certainly bring him up.”

While it may be disappointing for Morel to not start the season in the major leagues, the Cubs have made it clear that they have his long-term development in mind. Morel is still just 23 years old and has plenty of time to grow and improve as a player.

This decision also presents an opportunity for Morel to continue developing his skills at the minor league level and potentially earn his way back up to Wrigley Field in the near future.
